Day 14 Done!

Posted by iwanttodothat on September 4, 2010

I’m feeling back on track now. With 2 weeks of the Paleo Diet done, I’m starting to feel like I did a year ago when I started changing my diet. My sodium intake has gone way down and I can tell by my hands and feet, in particular. Any kind of puffiness is gone. My rings are off again, and my extremities are cold all the time.

I can feel a change in my upper abdomen. Maybe less puffiness? I’m not sure if it’s because of no grains, no dairy, or a combination of the two. Possibly weight loss, too. You just accept things for so long and think they are normal. I’m not sure if this is a real change or wishful thinking.

The most awesome thing so far was that during my monthly cycle, I experienced NO symptoms (other than the obvious one!) Seriously, none. Not one cramp, twinge, headache, nap… nothing. That in itself was a really huge benefit.

I’m having to remind myself that eating a big ol’ hunk of bread is just not worth it. I’m 14 days into a very strict 30 days, and I really want to make it without breaking down. I’m hoping to see enough changes that I don’t have to convince myself to keep eating like this. I shouldn’t need any convincing at all.

Today, I read a couple of good articles that really spoke to me:

  • The Whole30 – Great site to pump you up to try a squeaky clean eating plan for 30 days. You can do it!
  • Smoking Candy Cigarettes – Extremely well-written article/rant. Just plain awesome.

And finally, I came across the sad story of Garrett, a 28-year old weight-loss blogger, who lost his life way too early. His blog Stages of Change chronicles his recent years of struggle, despair, recovery, hope, and an unwillingness to give up on believing he would figure his mess out.

I’m trying to get my act together. I need to have serious boundaries like a strict Paleo eating style. I will take a mile if given an inch. I require supervision. I succeed when I have deadlines and rules. When I think in my head, “I can’t eat dairy,” that’s the end of the story. I can’t eat dairy. When I start thinking, “Well, I never had a problem with dairy before I went on this diet, so I could probably eat the ice cream and nothing will happen,” I will most certainly find myself at the bottom of a pint of Ben & Jerry’s trying to lick the bottom, and wondering what flavor I can eat next. I have no idea what my real physiological symptoms of dairy consumption have been, because I just turned off anything that resembled discomfort from eating. When eating is a major source of pleasure, you will endure whatever the consequences are. I am living proof of that, since I’ve ignored weight gain as a consequence of pleasure eating.

Finding healthy alternatives is difficult. I’m still working on that and probably will be for some time to come. Learning to fence was a highlight of this past year, and I took the summer off. Now, I’m out of shape and really want to lose another 30 pounds before I show up to start fencing again.

While I’ve made great strides in my diet these past weeks, I’m still on the starting block with my fitness program. I’m dealing with some personal stress and failure that I need to let go. I’ll be blogging about that this coming week.

Feel good Friday!

Posted by iwanttodothat on February 19, 2010

Last night at fencing class, I observed another fencer in a bout and she seemed as light and quick as a feather! She was really impressive to watch. I started wondering if I will ever get to that point. Will I someday be light and quick? It seems so far removed from my entire lifelong reality, that it seems nearly impossible.

As a major effort to get lighter, I’m going hardcore for awhile. This means no sugar, no gluten, sticking with eating plan, and burning a LOT of calories every day. I’d like to shed 20 pounds pretty quickly to help get me back into the groove. That means it’s Business Time. I’m not messing around here.

This morning, I had oatmeal and egg whites for breakfast, so I’m on the right track!

For some extra motivation, and a “feel good” moment, I thought I’d post a progress photo. What will I look like after another 50 pounds gone?

Day 137

Posted by iwanttodothat on January 14, 2010

Today starts with personal training and ends with fencing. Other than that, I’ve got a whole lot to get done around the house today. Lots of lists.

Here’s my food plan for the day:

7:15 Wake up, take meds, stretch, get ready for training.

8:00 Personal training with Maggie.

9:00 Breakfast. Protein shake from Maggie, 1 banana.

11:00 Snack. 1 apple, 10 almonds.

1:00 Lunch. 1/2c brown rice, 6oz tilapia, 2c broccoli, salad.

3:00 Snack. 1/2c fat-free cottage cheese, 1/2c frozen blueberries.

5:30 Dinner. 4oz chicken breast, 3c salad, grape tomatoes, onions, peppers.

9:00 Snack. Post-workout protein shake.

This morning at personal training, I broke the news to Maggie that my budget needs to take a month off from personal training. I’m sad, she’s sad. Here’s the thing, I need to see if I can manage to make progress without having her 2-3x/week. I’ll be honest here, I’m going to need some help from my support system that I’ve been cultivating for the last few months. The reality is that I feel like I’ve been at the Biggest Loser Ranch for 3 months and now I have to go home and get the job done on my own. I know I can do it, but I’ve also promised myself if I’m failing to make progress, I will call Maggie and get back on track. So, what I need from my dear readers, fans, friends, and family, is to be supportive and come out and join me for a 5k some time! You can do it!

I have a book recommendation for today to inspire you to be your best no matter where you are on this journey. It’s called Slow Fat Triathlete: Live Your Athletic Dreams in the Body You Have Now by Jayne Williams. Check it out!

Day 134

Posted by iwanttodothat on January 11, 2010

Okay, so readers like the food journal and the pictures. I will be back on track with that tomorrow, I swear!

Today, I got a seriously late start. I started cleaning out my closet, and so far, I have 2 bags of clothes that are going to Goodwill. I’m not even close to being done, either. After the clothes, I’m going through the yarn. There is a lot of it! Maybe I will finally knit myself a sweater next winter because it will be a much smaller project!!! LOL!

I didn’t calibrate my Nike+ today, but I did map out a 3-mile course on Google Maps that will be a nice change from my current route.

Today’s food so far:

2 fat-free Yoplait yogurts
1 clementine
1 Special K bar
2 slices whole wheat bread with mustard and 4oz chicken breast

The rest of the day’s plans:

Snack: 2 scoops EAS protein powder

Dinner: 2 scoops EAS protein powder (I know. Don’t feel like eating after fencing tonight. Better than nothing.)

Tonight, I have fencing, and I’m having a hard time getting pumped about going. I am still a beginner, and it’s just soooo difficult at my weight (at ANY weight, really, but especially at nearly 300 lbs). I missed last week due to a rehearsal one night, and being at Disney on the other night. So, I’m starting off the new year by missing a week of fencing. This is a recurring psychological theme in my life that I have to get over. Just because I miss 1-2 times, it is not the end of the world! In the music world (I’m a trained professional musician), you are trained to NOT miss anything. I’ve been in so many musical situations where if you are late, you’re fired, if you miss, you’re fired. Any infraction, and you’re fired or kicked out. I need to remember that fencing is for fun! A hobby! I go when I go, and enjoy it. It’s not a gig!

With all that in mind, I think I can do it!

Day 103

Posted by iwanttodothat on December 11, 2009

Life has been extremely busy. I’m doing pretty well with my eating, but not so much on my daily cardio.

Today my sport fencing equipment arrived from Triplette Competition Arms. They custom-made my jacket, which fits absolutely perfectly!!! I love it! My daughter is really excited about getting her gear, too. I feel like an actual fencer now!

Day 95

Posted by iwanttodothat on December 3, 2009

Confession time.

I have fallen off the wagon regarding my eating plan for about a week.  I want to chalk it up to having my period, but that can’t account for all of my poor choices. It all started last week on Tuesday night when I ate a huge Thanksgiving meal at a church service, and ate everything including 2 rolls and a piece of pecan pie. Seriously. I don’t know what got into me. Then there was Thanksgiving Day, when I ate some of everything, but didn’t make myself sick. I haven’t been strict since. So, I’m here right now pledging to document my food starting with lunch today. I’m going back to basics and taking pictures of everything I eat, again. That seems to work for me. I want to hit my 50-pound mark on Day 100 (next Tuesday) and that’s the only way it’s going to happen. So, I’m back on the wagon!

7:00 Woke up, took meds, stretched, got ready for personal training.

8:00 Personal Training session #26. Wow. Today was hard. I was digging my heels in and felt like a slug. I felt like I was just running out of steam on my whole makeover. The exercise regimen, the eating plan, everything is just getting to me a little. I’m tired because I haven’t been eating right this past week, and am feeling weak (in my head.) My self-control is lagging, as is my motivation. I need to get a handle on this!

9:00 Breakfast. Smoothie by Maggie.

11:30 Snack. 1/2c fat-free cottage cheese, 1/2c frozen blueberries, 2 packets Truvia.

3:00 Lunch. 1 flatbread turkey sandwich from Subway, no cheese, veggies, mustard.

Lunch, Day 95

5:45 Dinner. 6oz shrimp, 2c zucchini, 1T olive oil, 1T low sodium soy sauce.

Dinner, Day 95

7-9:00 Exercise. Fencing. Had a great time!

9:30 Snack. 6oz fatfree coconut creme pie yogurt (100 calories).

10:30 Bedtime.

Day 85

Posted by iwanttodothat on November 23, 2009

6:00 Woke up, took meds, did some work on the computer.

7:15 Exercise. Run/walk 3.5 miles. I think I ran over 60% of this! I felt strong and powerful this morning!

8:30 Went to Staples to buy inkjet cartridges for papers I needed at 10:30a!

9:45 Breakfast. 1/4c (uncooked) steel cut oats, 2 scoops protein powder.

12:30 Snack. 1 banana, 1 pear, 10 almonds. I went a little crazy but, hey, it was a really ripe pear in the fridge. Sue me.

6:00 Dinner. 5oz salmon, 3c mixed baby greens, o&v.

7:00 Exercise. Fencing. I worked up a serious sweat. Had a warm up drill with Matt, a lesson with Don, and target practice with another newbie.

10:30 Bed. Tired. Exhausted.
